Hello Autumn My Old Friend

Many people mourn the end of summer as they think cooler temperatures are the end of adventures.

While I hope I never have to live through another entire winter of snow I think autumn is the best time for travel and food.

Autumn has is a more enjoyable pace, fewer crowds and more time for cafes, strolls, easy hiking and enjoying the views without waking up at 5am to beat the crowds.

I spent most of August in Europe, having an amazing time with my mother. But we agreed that cooler weather and fewer crowds are much better.

The last few weeks I've been back Canada to catch my breath, cook all our own meals for a change and plan the next adventure.

I'm heading back to Central Mexico!

I visited last year with Alan. It was his first time out of Asia and he loved it. This time I'm on my own as he needs to take care of some things in Indonesia. I will miss him but...

I am SO looking forward to solo travel. I know it seems scary to some but I traveled on my own for over a decade and I think it's good to have a mix.

Then it's time for Ecuador!

Five years passed so quickly but it still feels like reuniting with an old friend. Well that is also what it is as I'm planning an Ecuador group trip with Andres.

We've mapped a route but now I want to travel it, visit hotels and see what special extra food aspects we can add to the trip.

Autumn is More Than Pumpkin Spice

Even if you're staying home it's still are great time with delicious autumn flavors, rich spices and one pot dishes that just simmer all day. Here are five of my favorites:

This red wine braised stew uses Chianti and it's so easy to make on a stovetop or in a slow cooker.

This butternut squash lasagna was the first time I tried squash and actually liked it. It's perfect to bring to a party or just Sunday at home.

This pickled chanterelles recipe is the best thing I've eaten pickled - hands down! It also has a spicy story as at the end of a relationship with a chef, he tried to "be friends" so I requested the recipe. I got the recipe but no, we're not friends.

This Mexican birria is so versatile, you can eat it on its own, as tacos, as a sandwich and I love that it's a bit spicy.

​Spicy maple ribs in the Instant Pot are perfect every time, you can't go wrong with spicy sweet.

BONUS: Maple bacon cookies because these shortbreads are so easy even a beginner baker could make them.
