I didn't want to go to Malaysia
But booking flights from Indonesia to Vietnam was tricky, Google Flights recommended transit through Singapore, which was a minimum 12 hours over night.
And Singapore is one of the most expensive countries in the world so an overnight hotel would be pricey.
Yet Indonesia and Vietnam are close. It's really only a few hours of flying. But I needed to find a way to put the pieces together.
And that's why I went to Malaysia.
With Air Asia if I took a one hour flight to Kuala Lumpur and stayed a few days to then fly 2 hours to Saigon it would be just over $100.
It was an easy decision and now I know - look at Kuala Lumpur first.
KL was a fantastic city to visit. We stayed in Chinatown for $20/night and discovered the city's love for food courts and night markets.
Although Malaysia has a majority Muslim population you can find alcohol in the tourist areas, similar to Bali. Although like Bali it's not cheap.
Tomorrow begins a short 4 part YouTube series. You can subscribe here to see me explore the city's free attractions, like the largest Hindu statue outside India and the Petronas Towers.
I also visited Little India, take a tour through Chinatown and eat unfamiliar things at a night market.
It was a short visit but I really loved the city, it's very livable. And it inspired me to plan a trip back to Malaysia later this year as I've heard Penang is fantastic for food and there is so much natural beauty.
If you're interested in Malaysia or have any tips I'd love to hear them.

Keep life delicious,

YouTube: My favorite city in Asia SPRING IS FINALLY HERE! Well not for me, it's 40C/100F in Southern Vietnam. It may sound strange but I miss the excitement of spring. It's when something as simple as a slightly warm day can change a community, and everyone is rejoicing that the snow may be gone! It's also the time for some of my favorite recipes. The fresh flavors of spring food bring an end to all of the heaviness in winter. And foraging food combines my passion of food with saving money 😊...
